12th FEBRUARY 2020

IMPORTANT NOTICE: DUE TO AN ADMIN ERROR THE DATES ON THE EVENTS PAGE WERE FOUND TO BE INCORRECT. THEY HAVE NOW BEEN CORRECTED. PLEASE CHECK AND APOLOGIES.

It has been a while since I updated these posts, due to other commitments.

Not a lot has happened in the last 2 months. The next Bridgtonian Magazine is due March 2020.

We have been conducting talks to the children at Bridgtown Primary School with David Williams, Derek Middleton, John Devey & Kath Page all involved. More on this as we get details.

Progress on the Blue Plaque for Ma Pardoe is good. Production of the plaque is in hand and we may have all ready by the end of February. Watch this space.

Here we are – Xmas again, well nearly!
Our Xmas Coffee Morning was well attended and all had a good time.
There were mince pies (Hot & Cold) biscuits and a nice hot drink.
Unfortunately, we could not get a choir on such short notice but we had a Karaoke type carol sing song.
Last but definitely not least we had a good raffle provided as ever by Sheila Jackson.
We are now looking forward to the next year when we hope to produce maybe three new books – a standard one if we can get some new photographs, and two more volumes of the Definitive history. Watch this space!

May we wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

TALK REVIEW JO GOLDBY : TOP TO TOE : “The price of vanity!”

The talk given by Jo Goldby on Wednesday 20th November was well received by a sparse audience. The talk centred on the lengths people went to, to keep up with fashions of the day. Jo was dressed as a Victorian ladies maid and brought with her a collection of fashionable unctions and lotions that men and women put on their skin. Some of these were very poisonous and no one would think of using them today!….. would they?? They included things like lead oxide, arsenic etc.

Jo put on a great talk, not too technical and humour played a big part. She was a National Trust guide for many years at Warwick Castle & latterly at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire as a volunteer guide and consultant whilst also travelling the country to give talks on various historical subjects where she dresses up appropriately.

Our thanks to Jo, for a thoroughly enjoyable morning.
